Call the Licensed Electricians Columbus, GA Trusts to Get It Done Right

You will for most electrical work. While there are exceptions, such as a like-for-like outlet replacement, Columbus requires permits for most electrical installations, upgrades, and repairs, including panel work, circuit additions, EV charger hookups, and generator installations. The fee is $75 per meter, set by the Columbus Inspections and Code Department. After work is complete, a city inspector confirms NEC compliance with the 2020 National Electrical Code before issuing approval.

Permitted work protects you during insurance claims and real estate transactions. Work done without permits creates liability and often requires a complete redo at your expense. Our Columbus electricians pull permits and coordinate every inspection, including for homeowners in areas like Green Island Hills and Magnolia Bend.

Frequently tripping breakers, lights that flicker when the AC starts, and no capacity left for a new EV charger are the clearest signals. Double-tapped breakers, where two wires share a single breaker slot, are a code violation and tell you your panel has run out of room.

Most Columbus homes built before 1990 were built with 100-amp panels, and many still have that panel installed. While fine for that time, modern homes running HVAC, a home office, an EV charger, and kitchen appliances at the same time typically need 200-amp service. We'll conduct a load calculation to confirm your actual demand. Columbus requires a permit for electrical panel upgrades, and completed work must pass inspection before the city signs off.

A burning smell near an outlet or your panel, crackling from the breaker box, outlets that feel warm to the touch, and breakers that trip immediately after resetting all require a call now. Don't reset a breaker that trips right back. That behavior signals a short circuit or ground fault, both of which are fire hazards.

Columbus storm seasons put real stress on aging electrical systems. Scorch marks or discoloration around an outlet or switch usually mean heat damage has already occurred. If you smell smoke, turn off the main breaker if you can do so safely, then call 911 before calling us. Our emergency electrician service in Columbus is available around the clock. Call our team and describe what you're seeing so we arrive prepared.

A Level 2 home charger needs a dedicated 240-volt circuit rated for 40 to 50 amps. Your electrician installs a dual-pole breaker in your panel, runs the correct wire gauge to your garage or carport, and either hardwires the unit or installs a NEMA 14-50 outlet. Georgia Power estimates roughly 80 percent of EV charging happens at home, typically overnight.

If your home has a 100-amp panel, that new 40-amp circuit can push your system past capacity when HVAC and kitchen loads run at the same time. A load calculation confirms whether you need a panel upgrade first. Columbus requires a permit for EV charger installation, and work must pass inspection. Our Columbus electricians handle the permit and can schedule the panel upgrade and charger installation together to cut labor costs.

No. The Consumer Product Safety Commission tested Federal Pacific panels and found one in three breakers defective. These breakers fail to trip during overloads and short circuits, creating fire hazards inside your walls. Zinsco panels have similar failure rates, with breakers that don't disconnect power when they should. Both brands also present a shock risk to anyone who opens them.

Thousands of these panels remain in older Columbus homes. If your panel is made by either manufacturer, replacement is the only safe option. Modern panels meet current electrical codes, provide reliable overcurrent protection, and have the capacity your home actually needs. Panel replacement requires a permit and must pass inspection before the city approves the work. Schedule an electrical safety inspection if you're unsure what panel your home has.
