Because it involves setting up wires that must work effectively around water, it’s wise not to risk a DIY installation unless you are a certified electrician.

    Much like setting up a dedicated circuit for an energy-intensive appliance, setting one up for a hot tub is time-consuming and complex. The basics of the task include installing a separate electrical panel that divides the power needs of your hot tub from the rest of the electronics in your home. Because hot tubs draw a significant amount of power to heat water, this helps prevent blackouts and short circuits elsewhere in your home.

Once the dedicated circuit is set up, we can get to work wiring your hot tub by carrying out the following steps:

  1. Turn off the electricity – The electricity needs to be turned off for any electrical work.
  2. Set up the spa panel – A spa panel prevents false tripping, which is common for hot tubs. The panel is mounted on the wall outside your home at least five feet from the hot tub.
  3. Lay the wiring – We dig a small trench to bury the conduit holding the wires. We then pull the wires through the conduit and bury it, being careful not to lay the conduit beneath the hot tub.
  4. Wire the panel – When everything is set up and the wires are in their proper place, we affix them to the spa panel to ensure proper and safe operation.
  5. Inspect the spa – We will test and inspect the spa to guarantee that it can be used safely.

  • Yes, an electrician should always wire a hot tub. Hot tub installation is a complex process; if anything is done incorrectly, it poses a severe safety risk. Improper installation can also lead to short circuits that damage your hot tub and other electronics.

    If you have recently purchased a hot tub and intend to install it yourself, we strongly recommend calling an electrician. Any cost savings you get from doing the installation on your own are not worth the safety risks.

    Does a hot tub need a dedicated circuit?

    Most hot tubs should be on a dedicated circuit. Hot tubs draw a lot of power to heat large quantities of water. If your hot tub is on the same circuit as your other devices, it can short the circuit and damage your entire electrical system.

    Some small hot tubs do not need to be on a dedicated circuit, though it is still recommended.
