What Is an EVSE Charger?
If you aren't familiar with EV chargers, there are options that you can choose from depending on your needs. There are three types of EV chargers: Level 1 Charger, Level 2 Charger, and Level 3 Charger:
- Level 1 Charger – A Level 1 charger is the most basic EV charger that comes with most electric vehicles. It can be plugged into a regular three-prong outlet. A Level 1 charger charges the vehicle batteries slowly, and it often takes more than 20 hours to fully charge the car's battery.
- Level 2 Charger – A Level 2 charger is a more advanced EVSE charger. It needs a dedicated 240-volt circuit and must be professionally installed in your garage. A Level 2 charger charges an EV faster than a Level 1 charger, and it usually takes about three hours to fully charge an EV.
- Level 3 Charger – A Level 3 charger is the most powerful EV charging device. It can be commonly found at public charging stations, and can add up to 160 miles of driving range to an EV's batteries in approximately 30 minutes. It has an industrial-level power draw, making it unsuitable for most homes. However, it can be installed in an industrial building.
